Take My Third Base Coach... Please!

Dear Mr. Colletti:

I hear you are interested in speaking with Mr. Acta regarding the managerial vacancy in your organization. May I say, well done sir! Mr. Acta would be yet another stellar choice in a long line of A1 choices made by your organization over the years. Trading Pedro Martinez to the Mets by way of Montreal and Boston was a helluva move. Then when you traded Mike Piazza to us - boy, that was great! Now, after the Phillips for Ishii trade, I really feel like we owe you one. Which is why the Mets are chipping in with the Padres, DBacks, and Giants to offer you a million bucks to sign Manny. Acta, not Ramirez (we might still want the Manny who can hit and make marginally decent baserunning decisions).

Think about it. Call me.
Sincerely,
GEC
Armchair GM, NY Mets

Yes, Definitely Happy.... And Maybe A Little Insane

Way to go, Omar! You swiped the (arguably) best closer in the game right out from under our division rivals. How sweet it is! Tell you what: if this guy saves enough games to get us to the World Series in '06, then he's earned every penny of that $43 mil if he never throws another pitch after that.

I also hear we have offers out to Ramon Hernandez and Bengie Molina. [voice lowered and creepy as I slowly rub my hands together] Eeexxxxxcellent!

Omar is like, the new George. Only younger, cuter, and a tad more reckless. What a time to be a Mets fan! Oh the deep pockets, oh the bright future! Sure, we'll take you too Tike Redman, whoever the hell you are! Here's a coupla million, just for being you!!

Strippers, candy, and martinis for all! WHOOOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Offseason [I think I might be] Happy Dance

Ok, I just read on ESPN.com that we signed Delgado. I'm happy and a little freaked out. Happy to have a slugger and an extra $7 million to play with. Freaked out that it cost us Petit and Jacobs. Ok, honestly, I could care less about the cash. But what I do care about is whether Delgado is going to be a good fit for the organization. This is a guy who refused to stand during God Bless America, in protest of the Iraq war. Politics aside, can you imagine a political statement like that going over well in a city like New York? I'm a little freaked out. The guy isn't exactly known for his sparkling clubhouse personality, you know? If we learned nothing else from the White Sox this year, it was that chemistry goes a hell of a long way towards winning championships. Happy and freaked out. That's me.

One last thing: TAKE THE OFFER, BILLY!

Cameron for Nady

I don't like it. A year ago, people were talking about a swap of Sheffield for Cameron, and even though I didn't like that, it was more than fair for the Mets. Ok, it would have been a great deal for the Mets, in retrospect, even though Sheff is pretty much a dick - the guy can flat out hit.

Seriously though, Xavier Nady? The guy who hit .261 with 48 RBIs last year? Him? Ok, so Mike wasn't an offensive juggernaut, but his clubhouse presence and gold glove defense was easily worth two Xavier Nadys. Easily.

I just hope some other team has designs on Nady, and Omar plans on using him to get a player with a value in the same ballpark as Mike Cameron. It was just a collision. An ugly one, but how the hell did his value plummet so sharply?

I'm going to miss Cammy.

Armchair GM (aka, NOT DEAD)

I guess I'm not big into offseason blogging. There's still this masochistic side of me that's too busy watching the Jets implode. They're like a train wreck and I can't look away.....

Anyway, it's friday night and I'm home with nothing else to do (read: LOSER) and I thought I should update the blog since it's been a few months. Plus, I kind of noticed that if you go a month or two without updating your blog, all of your fellow bloggers will drop you off of their lists of links like your DEAD. Jeez, can't a person take a little time off?

So here are some random thoughts about random guys:

Doug: I'm not your biggest fan anymore. I'm moving on. Now I need a new favorite Met. Wright is too popular in that Tiger Beat teen fantasy kind of way that makes me sick. I'd pick Woody if I didn't think he was a half a step away from being traded. Honestly, I'm at a loss here.

Furcal: no thanks. I'm hearing now that Raffy was just using the Mets to squeeze more cash out of those miserly Braves anyway. I'm relieved. I've never like the idea of taking a guy who has played his entire career at one position, and throwing him into another one. Not that I think Furcal couldn't pull it off, but am I the only person who noticed that guy has absolutely no discernable personality? That's just kind of creepy. Speaking of second base:

Is there any chance Kep or Hernandez will be ready to come up next year? If so, I say we hang on to the boatload of cash a guy like Furcal would demand. Speaking of boatloads of cash:

Omar, please don't overpay for Konerko or Delgado. Ok, maybe give Delgado lots of money if you can. But not Konerko. Save your money and go get John Olerud. Or Kevin Millar. Speaking of the Red Sox: I'm having these really disturbing images of Manny losing fly balls in the sun at Shea, or getting distracted by the jet planes buzzing Shea on their way to LaGuardia. So we're thinking it might be a good idea to put one of the worst defensive outfielders in the league in one of the toughest outfields in the league? He'd just better rack up a lot of freakin RBIs. That's all I'm saying.

Also, sign Billy Wagner. Please.

Where did I read that the Tigers would trade us Matsui for Rodriguez? Did I dream that? If it's for real, I say we take that trade in a heartbeat. I'd rather take Bengie Molina, but given all the other players on the Mets offseason wishlist, I'm not sure Wilpon's pockets are quite that deep.

All in all, I guess I'm not expecting any gigantic moves from the Mets this offseason. I think if all we do is improve the bullpen, I won't call it a total loss.
